Asia Accountability Initiative

Our vision

“We envision a world where the food industry embraces cage-free eggs across Asia”

About us

We empower individuals and organizations across Asia to support food businesses in fulfilling their animal welfare commitments and transparently reporting progress. By offering tailored training and strategic guidance, we help animal advocates become effective partners in advancing transparency and promoting ethical practices within the food industry. Through collaboration, we drive positive change that aligns with both business objectives and societal expectations.

Why cage-free commitments?

Egg-laying hens are often confined to small, overcrowded cages, severely restricting their ability to engage in natural behaviours like spreading their wings, dust bathing, and perching. For their entire lives, these hens are denied the freedom to move and behave as they would naturally.

The setting

Over the years, many food companies have pledged to improve the welfare of animals in their supply chains by sourcing higher-welfare products. For egg-laying hens, this means transitioning to cage-free systems, which allow the birds more space to move freely and express their natural behaviours.

The problem

However, in Asia, most companies have yet to fully meet these commitments or provide transparent updates on their progress toward sourcing cage-free eggs. Supply chain challenges have made it difficult for many businesses to honour these promises.

The response

In response, organisations have stepped in to support companies in overcoming these hurdles and fulfilling their animal welfare commitments. Asia Accountability Initiative plays a key role by supporting advocates who work with companies to track and report their progress on cage-free egg procurement.
